Chicken Run Fell Race, Hayfield School - Saturday 5th April 2014

This was the first, in what will be an annual event. All proceeds from this fell race will be used to fund the schools usage of the Hayfield community mini bus.

It was a wet morning, the forecast of intermittent showers, actually turned out to be one large one which persisted all morning! However, in true fell running style spirits were not dampened; the atmosphere was fantastic and everybody (adults and kids!) went on to have an enjoyable morning.

The children hunted happily for Easter egg tokens and then gave a superb effort in the junior races, which took them around the muddy slopes of the school field and wooded areas. There were 30 juniors running in 3 categories, all juniors were rewarded with medals and chocolate!

At 11am 53 runners set off on the senior race; 10 of these runners were competing in the short 5k loop and the remainder were running the longer 9.5k route. Of the 10 short loop runners we had several juniors running with parents; Katy Allison and Freddie Evans were 1st junior girl and boy back.

The 9.5k senior route took the runners up on to the moors using paths which are less well known; also passing along the side of the Kinder reservoir.

Simon Coldrick finished first in the mens senior race with a time of 38.40; this set our first race record! In second place was Nick Craig 41.20 and third was Daniel Chan 42.03. The ladies winner of the 9.5k senior race was Rachel Blight setting our ladies record for us at 52.09, second place was Mary Edgerton 57.21 and third Mary Jeal 1.07.50.

We had an amazing team of marshals; mostly friends and community members, who stood in the rain, smiled and did a fantastic job! Sue Brooks and Vicki Hayles would like to extend their immense thanks to them! Before during and after the race, a small team of fantastic folk kept everybody supplied with teas, coffees and cakes. The cakes were delicious; all home made and kindly baked by parents and staff from school, again enormous thanks must also be bestowed upon them for their time and effort!
